IBM i Networking Overview
Monday May 19, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm PDT
The IBM i OS network communications has changed a lot since the AS/400 primarily communicated to workstations and printers using Twinax and to other computer systems using specialized communications lines. In some ways things are more complex because our IBM i OS systems communicate to a lot of other devices in many different ways, but in other ways things are simpler today because nearly all network communications are built on top of the foundation of Ethernet and TCP/IP.

This session will take a look at these foundation Ethernet and TCP/IP and how they are built up within the IBM i OS. We will look at your communications adapters, Line Descriptions, and IP addresses, subnets, routes and more including the commands and interfaces used to manage these.

As time allows we may also look at some of the most commonly used networking servers Telnet and FTP and cover their basics of configuration, management and even troubleshooting.

System Limits on IBM i
Monday May 19, 2025 4:30pm - 4:50pm PDT
IBM i is an operating system that was built from the ground up to satisfy the needs of business computing. Even with its robust capabilities, IBM i customers requested additional insight into the top consumption of the most important system resources. Their request came from a business requirement to achieve optimal operations and limit any risk or potential outage related to over consumption of system resources. The IBM i response to this requirement was to architect On-Demand tracking of IBM i System limits. Attend this session to understand the architecture of System Limits and the different components within the operating system that have been instrumented for tracking. Lastly, the session will include details for how customers can leverage and consume this new source of system health insight.

ILE Concepts - and Analyzing ILE Objects with IBM i/Db2 Services
Tuesday May 20, 2025 9:15am - 10:15am PDT
Programs, Modules, Service Programs, Internal and exported Functions and Procedures, Binding Directories ... in short ILE Concepts are necessary for a modular and modern programming in RPG and other ILE messages. But ... sometimes still a mess.
Once the Concepts are understood and used, programs can easily be created by putting "puzzle pieces" pieces together, i.e. calling functions and procedures.
But how to analyze our ILE Objects, i.e. where are our procedures/functions located, which modules are bound to what (service-)programs etc?
The good news is, IBM provided in the last releases and technology refreshes a lot of powerful IBM and Db2 Services.
Among these services are also all kinds of Services for analyzing and managing ILE Objects.
This session combines an introduction into the ILE Concepts and shows what services are available for analyzing the ILE Objects (modules, programs, service programs, modules …)

We will talk about automating code scanning for less secure functions based on your requirements. We will also talk about checking object attributes during the deployment cycle to control adopting authority. The goal is to automate these checks so that they are consistent and there are no surprises after a promotion. We can use open source tools and in house business function or use commercial packages, but the key is automation so the checks happen every time.

IBM i Network Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
Tuesday May 20, 2025 9:15am - 10:15am PDT
IBM i network communications has changed a lot since the AS/400 primarily communicated to workstations and printers using Twinax and to other computer systems using specialized communications lines. In some ways things are more complex because our IBM i nodes communicate to a lot of other devices in many different ways, but in other ways things are simpler today because nearly all network communications are built on top of the foundation of Ethernet and TCP/IP.

Your IBM i Networking health is very important and is how most of your data and applications are accessed. Your IBM i may be fully up and running, but if network issues prevent business units from utilizing these applications and data the IBM i will be perceived as being down.

This session will take a look at approaches to monitoring this IBM i OS Networking health and it's interaction with the network, how to collection diagnostic data and how to troubleshoot problems.

Fun with JSON Publishing: Letting SQL Do the Dirty Work
Tuesday May 20, 2025 10:45am - 11:45am PDT
If you've ever been tasked as a developer with creating complex responses for an internal or external web service, you've likely explored multiple avenues for generating JSON from your IBM i programs. From constructing responses manually in your RPG code, to using various publicly available toolkits like YAJL, RPG NextGen, etc., there are a myriad of ways to create JSON strings with all the requisite curlies, commas, colons, quotes and hard brackets.

If you're on IBM i OS 7.2 or higher, there's yet another avenue you can explore in which you let SQL do all the JSON construction work for you. The biggest benefit of this approach becomes most apparent when your JSON response requires arrays, and especially nested subarrays. Coding such responses can be a bit tedious when done on a record-by-record basis in your program, whereas by using some nifty functions you can can let SQL assemble your JSON response automatically.

In this session we'll review the basics of JSON publishing functions such as JSON_Object, JSON_Array, JSON_ObjectAgg and JSON_ArrayAgg. We'll explore some practical use examples for publishing your business data in JSON, letting SQL do all the dirty work.

Analyzing Geospatial Data Using Db2 for i
Tuesday May 20, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm PDT
In everyday life when we asks questions like “Where is the nearest coffee shop” or “How far away is the airport” we are asking questions about geospatial data. Geospatial data is used to represent objects and events that occur on the surface of the earth. Geospatial analytics allows you to not only store geospatial data representing real location in your database, but to also compare and analyze geographic relationships and trends.

Commitment Control – Transaction Control
Tuesday May 20, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm PDT
In applications multiple steps have to be consolidated and executed as a unit (Transaction), That means either all steps or none of the steps must be performed. Example: An order has to be completely delivered or not at all.
No problem if everything is okay, but what if there is suddenly not enough inventory for one position?
Everything has to be reset … and this can become tricky, because multiple programs were executed, multiple rows in different tables were updated and may be even constraints or triggers were activated.
The solution is Commitment Control. Even though Commitment Control is not new, it is only rarely used in (traditional) IBM i applications. … but it is essential for keeping data consistent, especially when using techniques such as referential integrities and triggers.
… and it is even for traditional applications important.
… so, it is time to start!

Turn up the Power: External Disk and Hardware Replication on i... A Case Study!
Tuesday May 20, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm PDT
Your IBM i does a great job of managing internal disk, so why upgrade to external storage using a SAN? Your replication software may require some extra time and attention, but it gets the job done - so why change? Turns out there are lots of reasons to change both! This won't be a nuts and bolts how-to session. Rather it will be a case study of the decisions made by one large appliance and electronics retailer to implement these technologies, including the considerations, decisions, trade-offs, and benefits. You may not leave this session knowing how to do it, but you'll understand why you might want to, and you'll be ready to ask many of the right questions to get you there.

You'll leave this session better prepared to:

Determine if external storage is right for your environment
Understand the trade-offs involved with external storage and hardware replication
Know what questions to ask along the way!

When Job Tables Attack!
Tuesday May 20, 2025 5:05pm - 5:25pm PDT
There are very few issues that can threaten the stability of an IBM i LPAR, but one of them is filling of the system job tables. Circumstances can make this happen quickly even though you may not see it very often if at all! Even if you have seen the dreaded job table message, it may have been so long ago you don't recall what to do. Time may be of the essence when taking corrective action, so knowing what is happening and how to fix it can be critical.
Protect your system and be able to thwart this threat before it becomes truly dangerous.

Optimize Code Review through Automation, DevOps Style
Wednesday May 21, 2025 8:00am - 9:00am PDT
Peer code  review has great benefits but is often not fully formalized because it can be labor intensive. Often due to limited resources peer code review is limited to more complex changes. DevOps promises automation to reduce the overhead but how can it work on the IBM i? This session will discuss automation at a high level and dig deeper into the tools available for peer review, open source and otherwise, that can be used on IBM i source. We'll cover the use at the developer level with linting where the code can be previewed and at the workflow process level where it is automated. The automation tools discussed will be pull/merge requests and pipeline tools like SonarCube etc. We will also cover the limitations of IDEs and tools and how that impacts automation.

Building a Successful IFS Security Strategy
Wednesday May 21, 2025 10:45am - 11:45am PDT
Ask any security professional which area of IBM i security is most often ignored and chances are the unanimous response is a chorus of “the Integrated File System."

Many organizations are either unaware of the risks that an unsecured IFS poses or are simply unsure of how to secure it. Regardless of the reason, this is a problem. The system interface doesn’t differentiate how a user profile accesses data – which leaves sensitive data exposed and vulnerable to manipulation, malware, and even theft.

Managing the startup and shutdown of IBM i
Wednesday May 21, 2025 3:45pm - 6:00pm PDT
In days gone by the IBM supplied program QSTRUP combined with a couple options on CHGIPLA was good enough for most IBM i shops. It started what seemed to be needed and anything else we stumbled through after each IPL. When it was time to shut down a PWRDWNSYS or ENDSBS command took down whatever was running. We were happy.

Today though we often see dozens of subsytems running many web servers, other needed batch jobs and services. We see monitors and queue processing jobs and many writers. For security purposes we should be starting only the TCP servers that we need, not all of them. Likely we should not start IPV6 and start things in sequence as well.

Further considerations may be needed in an HA environment. These include not starting jobs until iASPS are available and starting different IP interfaces and services depending on production or backup mode of the server. We may want to handle special startup modes while doing PTFs, backups or other system maintenance.

In this session we will work with customizing that startup. We'll discuss staring PASE jobs with QSH, web server jobs and more. Finally we will also work with sequencing the shutdown of the system. As part of this we'll discuss some simple ways to know what needs to be shut down and smoothly handling that.

Practical Examples of pulling web service data into your IBM i applications
Wednesday May 21, 2025 5:00pm - 6:00pm PDT
Obtaining information from external systems or data servers has come a long way since the introduction of EDI in the 1980s! Today, publicly available web service APIs offer a much more flexible and easier-to-integrate method for pulling pertinent global data into your IBM i applications. Whether it be commodity prices, financial data, current weather information, demographic statistics or whatever else you can think of, there is no shortage of information available on the internet that could complement certain areas of your company's business, thus adding valuable real-time information to your various user applications.

In this session we'll put this concept to work in a hands-on fashion. The presenter will use real-world API examples to demonstrate how IBM i developers, using SQL, can quickly access this valuable web service repositories and pull data into an RPG program or UI tool for their users.

Attendees will see three simple 5250-based interactive examples in action, with source code they can try on their own systems.

You're Fired! ... Now What?
Thursday May 22, 2025 8:00am - 9:00am PDT
Some of us are lucky enough to have a single job for our entire career, but for most, we will at some point change jobs - either by our choice or our employer's choice. It just makes sense to be prepared for that reality, in case it happens. The irony is that many of the things you can do today to make yourself more employable in the event you ever do find yourself fired also may just make it far less likely that you ever will be fired!

We will answer questions such as:
What is journaling doing at its core?
What are the benefits for journaling when I'm not replicating to a second system?
Why do I need to journal for Hardware Replication?
Why should I journal if I want to use Flash Copy?
What is remote journaling and how is it used for Logical Replication?
What are the journaling implications for DB2 Mirror combined with long distance logical replication?

Configuration of the monitors is done using yaml file:

Key metrics which Instana is capturing:

Active jobs
Threads
Auxiliary storage pool consumption
Temporary storage
Total spool space

Events and Alerting feature of Instana
Instana has the capability to generate an alert whenever user defined message ID, queue library and queue name combination matches for any of the incoming messages in the message queue within the specified time (like last 10 minutes). These alerts will enable you to take any necessary action sooner.

Whenever a message is produced which is being monitored using yaml file is picked up by instana and corresponding alert is generated.

Thursday May 22, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm PDT
The first OLAP Functions were already introduced with Release 6.1, for building running numbers and ranks, in a specific sequence and even with the ability to restart numbering at a predefined level. At release 7.3 a bunch of additional OLAP functions and enhancements for existing OLAP functions are introduced. With these enhancements it is possible to easily build running totals or averages with or without level breaks. Data cannot only be accumulated over all rows, but also within a specific range. It is easy to access and compare the first, previous, next or last occurrence of the data within a partition. This session will give you an overview over the available OLAP functions and how they can be exploited.

VS Code and Code for IBM i Hidden Gems
Thursday May 22, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm PDT
Thanks to the Code for IBM i open source extension, VS Code became an IDE of choice for whoever wants to do some development on IBM i. Less expansive (as in "free") and more modern than RDi, it's already a daily driver for IBM i professionals and enthusiasts alike. But what does it have to offer we barely know? What are the less-known features that can make a developer's life easier? The legend tells that it's even possible to work locally on IBM i source code synchronized with Git or to use Visual Explain right from VS Code. But the best is yet to come and see for yourself! Whether you are a seasoned developer or just curious, join me to discover or rediscover the hidden gems that VS Code has to offer. Don't be a stranger and bring your questions along!

ListAgg and Split – Grouping, Aggregating and Dividing again
Thursday May 22, 2025 3:00pm - 4:00pm PDT
Almost everybody working with SQL knows the GROUP BY specification for accumulating identical information. Those queries are quite often combined with aggregate functions such as SUM() or AVG().
With the multi-dimensional grouping it is possible to also add all kinds of sub-totals as well as a grand total to the queries.
In composition with CASE clauses it is possible to accumulate information and return the data in different columns, for example monthly or quarterly sales per customer. Pivot tables can be easily created … as long as the number of output columns is fixed.
Sometimes, however, we have to accumulate information that is located in multiple rows in a single row, for example all items in an order. Unfortunately, the number of output columns (i.e. Items) may differ. However, with the LISTAGG aggregate function a string containing the different information separated by a comma (or any individual separation string) can be built.
As far as good … but how to split a string with multiple information separated by a comma or any other individual separation string? No problem with the SPLIT service! … in composition with other services even *.csv files located in the IFS can be decomposed

Visual Explain - IBM's SQL Performance Show-&-Tell
Thursday May 22, 2025 3:00pm - 4:00pm PDT
For many years now IBM have positioned SQL as the primary interface to the database on IBM i. At the same time, new capabilities are being added only to SQL, not to the native database interface.

We need a different tool to understand and analyze query implementation plans and feedback from the optimizer – the SQL component that determines the most effective way to deliver the data we ask for in SQL statements. Visual Explain is just such a tool, and it both shows us graphically what plan the optimizer has chosen, as well as tells us details about each step along the way. It can also give us suggestions on ways to improve performance of our queries.
